Thanks to the amazing support of the Hasbrouck Insect Collection community, we have exceeded our goal for this campaign! We were able to properly store and document the Nadborne Collection. Though this campaign is complete, you can still join the team and make a difference by contributing here: http://www.asufoundation.org/biokic

Did you know that 40% of the U.S. butterfly species occur in Arizona? Help us provide access to a unique insect collection and educate the public about Arizona's butterfly diversity. Update: Goal achieved. Thank you for supporting our Campaign!

Who we are. We are the
Hasbrouck Insect Collection at Arizona State University. The collection contains more than 12,000 insect species from the Southwest. Our mission is to discover the insect diversity of Arizona, and to make this information accessible for research and education. We are passionate about bugs and reach our audiences through diverse programs. Learn more about our mission here.

Our project. At the turn of 2015, we were fortunate to receive a donation of the
Nadborne Collection. It is named for the naturalist who spent 50 years to build up this invaluable resource of 45,000 insect specimens.

Even though the specimens - including spectacular butterflies and beetles from all corners of Arizona - are in excellent condition, the storage and access conditions are
poor. Most of the material remains in freezers and plastic containers.

What we need. The scientific and educational value of this collection is immense. Yet we can only realize this potential with new infrastructure and support for our team. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to:

  • Add 1 large cabinet
  • Add 50 drawers
  • Produce images for 350 species of Arizona butterflies for our web portal

Why it's important. Once the images are on-line, any user can c
all up SCAN on their handheld device. They can then navigate to the map, and find out which butterfly species occur within a 20 miles radius. They can view our new images and learn more about each species. The pages and images can be shared directly on Facebook or Twitter.

If you like butterflies, or support our efforts to provide virtual access to Arizona's biodiversity - please donate today!

New Arizona Butterfly images are coming on-line

As part of our Campaign we have concentrated on imaging our butterfly specimens and bringing images on-line. Student collection members Lisa Hoefler and Jean-Baptiste Quirino have led this effort and produced 150 new high-resolution images in the first 25 days of the Campaign. See the images by clicking on these links:

Our Event with ASU Explores Outdoors!

Published on Tuesday, Apr. 28, 2015 at 06:22 PM (MST)
Recently, our team participated in the ASU Explores Outdoors event where life sciences professors and graduate students highlighted the unique geography and plant life during several interactive tours. Adults and children enjoyed a beautiful morning nature walk and received an up close experience with Arizona’s diverse flora, fauna and wildlife such as birds, insects, reptiles and mammals. By donating today, you can provide the tools to make the Nadborne collection available to the public at future events like this.
