What is SHOW?

SHOW is a student run free clinic providing holistic healthcare for those experiencing homelessness in downtown Phoenix. We currently host a Saturday clinic on the Human Services Campus serving about 500 individuals annually. Patients receive medical, psychiatric, and specialty care during a single visit.

Community Impact

In addition to providing weekly clinical services, SHOW is active in the community by providing health educational classes covering topics such as foot care, diabetes and hypertension, sexual wellness, and more. SHOW also hosts an annual health fair providing free screenings and resources for several hundred attendees. Since July 2015, SHOW has served over 1500 individuals through our outreach efforts.

Developing Future Health Professionals

SHOW enables students from NAU, ASU and UofA to practice interprofessional care in a clinic setting.  More than 300 students from 16 professional programs across the three universities ranging from nursing, social work, nutrition, medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant, audiology, speech pathology, occupational therapy, and physical therapy to business, journalism, and computer science, have worked together with faculty and community partners on the design and development of the program. This interprofessional way of care helped over 92% of patients feel their health was improved by their visit. Our clinic and community outreach programs has provided over 100 students and 25 providers with learning and practice experiences.

Expanding Our Reach

This project will expand access to health promotion, prevention, transitional care, and chronic illness management care for individuals with substance abuse disorders by bringing together an interprofessional student-led model of community-based care with Crossroads, an experienced and committed community partner. Crossroads has been providing residential substance abuse treatment services for men, women, and veterans in Phoenix for over half a century. In 2015, they provided treatment for over 1,400 individuals. While Crossroads is licensed to provide the necessary scope of services to support recovery and transition from residential treatment and to contract with major insurers and Medicaid for them, they have not had the workforce or funding to do this. The partnership between the SHOW program and Crossroads will enable students and faculty from nursing, social work, and occupational therapy to learn best practices in the full continuum of care for substance abuse and to work in interprofessional teams with residents, experienced practitioners and community organizations to expand and improve care. It will allow Crossroads to meet licensure requirements and increase access while saving significant funds.
